VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES

Love animals? Enjoy interacting with the public? Then, the Natural Science Center has a volunteer opportunity for you! There are several different types of opportunities at the NSC including becoming a docent, a classroom or camp assistant, a facilitator in Kid’s Alley, an exhibit guide, a greeter and someone to help out during special events and outreach programs.  The Science Center is always accepting new volunteers and welcomes people of all ages, interests and backgrounds.

If you want to help out and handle animals, you can become a trained docent in Animal Discovery, the Museum or one of our touch labs. The word "docent" simply means "educator" and workshops (periodically held throughout the year) are designed to instruct our volunteers how to educate the Center's visitors about our zoo and touch labs. All volunteers who work with animals at an AZA-accredited facility must have completed a series of docent workshops.

If you are interested in becoming a volunteer or trained docent to work with animals, please contact Marion Gilligan at (336) 288-3769 ext. 330 or mgilligan@natsci.org.

We also have Jr. Curator Volunteer Opportunities. Click here for more information on how to become one. Applications are due March 16, 2012.

*************

The Natural Science Center is especially proud of 87 of its volunteers who earned the President’s Volunteer Service Award presented by the Points of Light Foundation and President OBama in the 2010-2011 year.  The President's Council on Service and Civic Participation created the President’s Volunteer Service Award program as a way to thank and honor Americans who, by their demonstrated commitment and example, inspire others to engage in volunteer service.  The Award recognizes individuals, families, and groups that have achieved a certain standard – measured by the number of hours of service over a 12-month period or cumulative hours earned over the course of a lifetime.  Click here for a list of this year's recipients.
