NATURE TOTS

Wake up winter and march into spring with this set of hands-on explorations for our youngest scientists. Active sessions involve animals, demonstrations, art, music and stories. Choose a six or eight punch card out of our ten sessions and come when you and your nature tot decide. Click here for a list of topics!

STORYTIME SCIENCE

Connect nature with the books you read while you enjoy science time with your favorite tot. This winter we’ll take a fun look at the world around us with the stories of Lois Ehlert. Her simple stories and imaginative art bring nature to life. Complement her natural collage illustrations with your own crafts from paper and objects from nature as you and your tot learn about leaves, snow and color.

LEAP YEAR LEARNING

Help us kick off the Year of the Frog with a wet and wiggly look at amphibians. Meet a frog and salamander and learn about how they live and where to look for them in our local habitats. You’ll find out why their skin and calls are so special and create your own frog craft to take home.

SCIENCE EXPLORERS

Dig a little deeper into earth sciences as we look at how minerals are classified and formed and study geothermal power, plate tectonics and volcanic eruptions. Geology – it’s sedimentary!

TAKE A HIKE

We’ll compare the last of winter with signs of spring as we investigate woods, streams and ponds at the Science Center and Country Park. Then we’ll return to the lab to look at some of the small critters and pond life we find. Wear sturdy shoes and prepare to dig into science for this hands-on hike!

KITCHEN CHEMISTRY

 Mix and measure your way to experiments that foam, ooze and even explode (a little). Students will take home excellent experiments to repeat at home with simple ingredients.

GIRLS IN SCIENCE

Join an all-girl team of scientists as you sample different areas of science, from animals and plants to volts and jolts, fun physics to crazy chemistry. The science is the same but the dynamics are often different in activities that focus on girls and help support women in science. Each session covers a different area of science.

WOLF WELCOME

Celebrate St. Patrick’s Day the greenest way we know how – investigating “green” building and conservation efforts in our newest exhibit. Learn about endangered maned wolves and their ecology, then switch to local efforts as we study solar energy, water conservation and insulated building blocks.

HOME SCHOOL ADVENTURES

Cool chemistry! We’ve divided chemistry concepts into two age groups as students learn about basic chemical compounds and structure and move into reactions and results. Chemicals used in this course are safe and supervised and used to teach the scientific method and careful use of chemicals and equipment. $65 Members/$85 Non-members.

FOR EDUCATORS

PROJECT LEARNING TREE

Teachers/informal educators of grades preK-8 are invited to a day of hands-on training with Project Learning Tree. PLT is designed to teach students how to think not what to think about environmental issues. Use PLT in your classroom to teach about both the natural and built environments – forests, wildlife, water, air, energy, waste, climate change, invasive species, community planning, culture, and more. This state-of-the-art curriculum resource is packed with 96 multi-disciplinary activities – each tailored to specific grade levels and learning objectives. Most activities require few special supplies or extra preparation. All include up-to-date student resources and reproducible, background information for educators. Participants receive free PLT materials. Bring a bag lunch. LT1: Guilford County Teacher Workday: Monday, Feb 25; 8:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m.

LEGOS

EARLY (Engineering And Robotics Learned Young) LEGOs
Ages 8-10 years

EARLY LEGO Explorations uses LEGO parts, motors and a battery box to learn the basics of sound mechanical engineering and good building techniques. The emphasis is on building sound structures and working moving creations. Motors and battery boxes are involved to help make things move. No computers or programming is involved.
One session per child, please.

The Natural Science Center science program features many exciting topics and activities. Our age-appropriate programs stress hands-on learning that is active and fun.

Pre-registration is required. Full class fees are due at time of registration. Member registration begins January 23, 2008 at 8:00 a.m. Membership may be purchased/renewed with class registration.

By Mail: Full payment must be included with the completed registration form. Send to: Natural Science Center Winter/Spring Classes, 4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455. If class enrollment is full, you will receive a phone call and a full refund.

By Phone: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at (336) 288-3769 ext. 315. Registration accepted with VISA and MasterCard.

Non-members may register beginning January 30, 2008. Refunds for withdrawals will be made if the Museum is notified at least 14 days in advance. A service charge of $5 per participant per workshop will be charged. The Museum reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. We will make this determination two weeks prior to the beginning of class. Should this occur, you will receive notification and a full refund. Limited financial assistance is available. Contact the Curator of Community Programs at 288-3769 ext. 316 for details. The learning experiences we provide may involve glue, markers, and other substances that may stain. Our programs may occur in an outdoor setting and use animals. Science can be messy – please make sure that participants are dressed appropriately.
