Nature Tots

Fall stories, crafts and songs join animals and simple science in this series made for tot/adult partners. This is a great way to make science a part of your active week. Choose a six or eight class punch card out of our ten sessions and come when you and your nature tot decide. Click here for a list of weekly topics.

Pint-Sized Professors

Green Team 1 - We’re reducing the carbon footprints of our littlest feet! We’ll take recycling to high art, learn about people power and work to help out animals as we build a squirrel feeder, make a recycled bird feeder and make an enrichment treat for the lemurs to eat. The theme of each class is how small efforts really can work in daily practice.

Rockin’ “Reptember” - Class is full. Call (336) 288-3769 ext. 315 to get added to the waiting list.Feed a tortoise, one of our gentle giants, and get nose to nose with a box turtle as we investigate reptiles with shells. Then, make a snake and meet several different snakes and lizards to compare and contrast the slithery set. Sign up for one or both of our scaly classes. Science Explorers

Green Team 2 - Our older set will go “green” in three different ways. We’ll look at the power of the sun as we test ultraviolet radiation, harness the energy of photovoltaic cells and even cook our own snack. We’ll also learn how to create recycled paper and use it in art. Then, we’ll dig into worms with a take-home vermiculture (worm composting) project.

Inside Out - These labs are not for the squeamish but are a great in-depth look at anatomy for our serious, curious naturalists. Sign up for one or both:

Fish:

Review different fish adaptations and dissect them as you follow the digestive tract, experiment with swim bladders and compare muscles and fin structure. You’ll also practice the art of gyotaku, fish printing, to take home a colorful reminder of your work.

Squidlab:
From sacs of color to a beak like a parrot’s, the squid is one fascinating discovery after another. Learn how a squid moves and eats and try your hand using squid ink, a cousin of original “sepia.” Note: this is an early release day for Guilford County students.

GRADES 5-7

Fall Hike - What happened to the spring tadpoles and bird nests? Search for critters and changes as the shortening days bring a close to the summer frenzy. We’ll investigate the many different habitats at the NSC and Country Park, then return to the lab to observe some of the small critters and pond life we find. Wear sturdy, closed-toe shoes and prepare to dig into science for this hands-on adventure!

HOME SCHOOL ADVENTURES

We’re going back to nature in this series and will investigate the streams, ponds, woods and open areas of the Science Center and surrounding parks. Students must be prepared with closed-toe shoes and be ready for the field as we investigate and make journals of field observations and classroom studies throughout the course.
$65 Members/$85 Non-members

LEGOS

Ages 6-8 - Beginner LEGOs - By popular demand we are introducing our youngest engineers to building challenges, teamwork and creative innovation with our favorite building blocks. Classes have both directed assignments and creative free-building time to apply lessons with gears and pulleys, shapes and sizes. One session per child, please. $40 Members/$60 Non-members

NEW SESSIONS ADDED!
Ages 8-10 EARLY (Engineering And Robotics Learned Young) LEGOs -EARLY LEGO Explorations uses LEGO parts, motors and a battery box to learn the basics of sound mechanical engineering and good building techniques. The emphasis is on building sound structures and working moving creations. No computers or programming is involved. One session per child, please. $55 members/$70 non-members

The Natural Science Center science program features many exciting topics and activities. Our age-appropriate programs stress hands-on learning that is active and fun.

Pre-registration is required. Full class fees are due at time of registration. Membership may be purchased/renewed with class registration.

By Mail: Full payment must be included with the completed registration form. Send to: Natural Science Center Fall Classes, 4301 Lawndale Drive, Greensboro, NC 27455. If class enrollment is full, you will receive a phone call and a full refund.

By Phone: Monday-Friday, 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at (336) 288-3769 ext. 315. Registration accepted with VISA and MasterCard.

Refunds for withdrawals will be made if the Museum is notified at least 14 days in advance. A service charge of $5 per participant per workshop will be charged. There is a $5 charge for program/session changes. The Museum reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. We will make this determination two weeks prior to the beginning of class. Should this occur, you will receive notification and a full refund. Limited financial assistance is available. Contact the Curator of Community Programs at 288-3769 ext. 316 for details. The learning experiences we provide may involve glue, markers, and other substances that may stain. Our programs may occur in an outdoor setting and use animals. Science can be messy – please make sure that participants are dressed appropriately.
