FALL SCIENCE EXPLORATIONS

Join us for a fall of fun and learning with science that ranges from the submersible Alvin to the stars of our Zoo. Our age-appropriate programs provide science enrichment with lots of hands-on learning.  


Ages 2- 4 with an adult

Nature Tots
Fall stories, crafts and songs join animals and simple science in this series made for tot/adult partners. This is as great way to make science a part of your active week. Choose a five or seven punch card out of our eight sessions and come when you and your nature tot decide. Weekly topics will be posted on our website in September and given out in class.

Pint-Sized Professors: Animals Around the World 1
Our zoo focuses on adaptations of animals from around the world. Come and meet them by continent as you also learn about some of the crafts and songs of each land. We’ll travel to Australia, Asia and South America. Each class includes an up-close animal encounter.

Rockin’ “Reptember
Feed a tortoise, one of our gentle giants, and get nose to nose with a box turtle as we investigate reptiles with shells. Then, make a snake and meet several different snakes and lizards to compare and contrast the slithery set. Sign up for one or both of our scaly classes. And don’t forget to visit the Science Center on September 19 for Snaketacular!

Extreme Deep
Think Alvin is a chipmunk? The deep sea rover, Alvin, has helped us understand life on the sea floor.  Our current special exhibit explores these deep sea discoveries. Find out how pressure, light and temperature affect ocean life with hands-on experiments.

Animals With Class
Get to know the five classes of vertebrates: fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals, plus a day of invertebrates to compare. Classes will study group characteristics, adaptations, structure and behavior. Students must be prepared with closed-toe shoes and be ready for field observations as well as classroom studies throughout the course.
Grades 1-3

Nature’s Inspiration: Writing Workshop
Are you inspired by observing the wonders of the natural world? Join Beth Almy, NSC educator and author of Faces of the Earth, as she takes you through the writing process…from inspiration to publication! Participate in animal observation activities, put your words to work and try your hand at book illustration. Each participant will create his/her own masterpiece and will also receive a copy of Faces of the Earth to take home!

LEGOS

 

Beginner LEGOs
Ages 6-7

We are introducing our youngest engineers to building challenges, teamwork and creative innovation with our favorite building blocks. Classes have both directed assignments and creative free-building time to apply lessons with gears and pulleys, shapes and sizes. One session per child, please.

EARLY (Engineering And Robotics Learned Young) LEGOs
Ages 8-10 years

EARLY LEGO Explorations uses LEGO parts, motors and a battery box to learn the basics of sound mechanical engineering and good building techniques. The emphasis is on building sound structures and moving creations. Motors and battery boxes are involved to help make things move. We have expanded and split our EARLY program into different themes to give more options. Choose LEGOs A or B; you do not need experience in either one.
Please, one session per child.  

EARLY A – Simple Machines and Programming
From wheels and axels to gears and pulleys, students learn the basics of simple machines. They also learn the basics of computer programming for their battery boxes using LEGO Education WeDo Robotics, an icon-based introduction to robotics that uses motors and sensors.
One session per child, please.

EARLY B – Simple and Motorized Mechanisms
This extension of EARLY A classes uses elements to investigate motorized machines, calibrate and capture the wind and study gearing mechanisms. It also introduces pneumatics.
One session per child, please.

Pre-registration is required. Full class fees are due at time of registration. Member registration begins Wednesday, September 2, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. Memberships may be purchased or renewed with class registration.

Non-members may register beginning Wednesday, September 9, 2009 at 8:30 a.m. Refunds for withdrawals will be made if the museum is notified at least 14 days in advance. A service charge of $5/participant/workshop will be charged for refunds or changes. The Museum reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. We will make this determination two weeks prior to the beginning of class. Should this occur, you will receive notification by phone and a full refund. Limited financial assistance may be available. The learning experiences we provide may involve glue, markers, and other substances that may stain. Our programs may occur in an outdoor setting. Science can be messy – please make sure that participants are dressed appropriately.
