Nature Tots
Spring stories, crafts and songs join animals and simple science in this series made for tot/adult partners. This is as great way to make science a part of your active week. Choose a five or seven punch card out of our eight sessions and come when you and your nature tot decide. Weekly topics will be posted on our website in January and given out in class.

Pint-Sized Professors
Toy Physics, Jr. - See why toys spin, swing or fly as we investigate the science behind everyday toys. Experiment with your own creations and discover how scientists “play.” You’ll take home your own creations and use some of ours in this fun physics class. Pond Play
See how our zoo pond “wakes up” in the spring as you investigate pond life. You’ll sample the water and look for microscopic critters, look for baby bugs and algae. On the way, you’ll hike through woods waking up to spring. In class, take a look at your samples and share what you’ve found.

Science Explorers

Toy Physics - Get ready for gizmos and gadgets as you learn about simple machines and discovery toys that teach, from gyroscopes and whirligigs to raceways and magnets. You will take home your own gizmos in this class that will get you thinking about how toys work.

Outdoor Explorers

Wear your sneakers and get ready to explore the great outdoors! From streams to pond, woods to field, we’ll check out the many varied habitats of Natural Science Center grounds. Science sleuths will be on the lookout for signs of spring in plant and animal life and will also try cool outdoor experiments and classroom investigations.

Take a Hike
We’ll compare the last of winter with signs of spring as we investigate woods, streams and ponds at the Science Center and Country Park. Then we’ll return to the lab to look at some of the small critters and pond life we find. Wear sturdy shoes and prepare to dig into science for this hands-on hike!

HOMESCHOOL ADVENTURES

Winter Wonderland

Have you ever wondered about winter? Join us as we investigate winter snow and ice, discover how animals and plants (and people, too) survive the cold, and learn how to build a fire and a shelter. Come wonder about winter with us! Come prepared to go outside each day with warm winter gear!

Earth Science Rocks!

Earth science is a big field, relating to the physical Earth, its water and atmosphere. Sample some of the science fields, from geology to meteorology, with a little soil science and dino-digging thrown in. You’ll investigate weather phenomena, from local Greensboro thunder and lightning to earthquakes, tsunamis, and hurricanes. Study different minerals and rocks, grow crystals and get the lowdown on dirt. You’ll also take a closer look at dinosaurs and fossils.

Beginner LEGOs
Ages 6-7

Our youngest engineers learn about building challenges, teamwork and creative innovation with our favorite building blocks. Classes have both directed assignments and creative free-building time to apply lessons with gears and pulleys, shapes and sizes. One session per child, please.

EARLY (Engineering And Robotics Learned Young) LEGOs

LEGO Robotics

Ages 11-16

Experience LEGOs in a way you have never done before! We will build and program fully autonomous robots from LEGOs and RoboLab software. Everyone will have a hands-on opportunity to test his/her ability to solve an assortment of past FIRST LEGO League mission games. LEGO Robotics uses a combination of programmable RCX and NXT bricks. All robotic actions are programmed by the participants and operate autonomously.

REGISTRATION INFORMATION

Pre-registration is required. Full class fees are due at time of registration. On-site member registration begins Wednesday, January 13 at 8:30 a.m. Walk-in registrants are taken as a priority over mail-in or phone call registrants. Memberships may be purchased or renewed with class registration.

Non-members may register beginning Wednesday, January 20 at 8:30 a.m. Refunds for withdrawals will be made if the museum is notified at least 14 days in advance. A service charge of $5/participant/workshop will be charged for refunds or changes. The Museum reserves the right to cancel a class due to insufficient enrollment. We will make this determination two weeks prior to the beginning of class. Should this occur, you will receive notification by phone and a full refund. Limited financial assistance may be available. Contact the Curator of Community Programs at 288-3769 ext. 316 for details. The learning experiences we provide may involve glue, markers, and other substances that may stain. Our programs may occur in an outdoor setting. Science can be messy – make sure that participants are dressed appropriately.
